# How scans work

> How Mentiofy asks assistants, refreshes results, and handles a failed scan.

A scan sends your active prompts to the assistants listed on [Settings](https://docs.mentiofy.com/workspace/settings.md) and stores the answers.

A finished scan updates that day's results for the assistants that ran. An assistant that did not run keeps its earlier result for that day.

## What the dashboard uses

The headline numbers are the average of the last 7 days, counted in UTC. The trend compares that window with the 7 days before it. A trend shows up once both windows have at least one day with data.

The chart on the dashboard follows the same 7-day window. Scores on an individual prompt use a shorter comparison: the latest completed run against the run before it. See [Metrics overview](https://docs.mentiofy.com/metrics/overview.md).

## When scans run

Mentiofy runs your active prompts every day. You do not pick the day. Settings shows which assistants run.

## When a scan fails

If the latest scan does not finish and the dashboard already has results, those results stay on screen.

**Retry scan** starts another run for today. It is available when you can edit the project, billing allows a run, and today does not already have a scan that is pending, running, or finished. A failed scan for today can be tried again. A finished scan for today is left as it is.

When the owner's payment is past due, the project is read-only and new scans wait until billing is restored.
